Jibon Ahmed, a photojournalist, witnessed the July uprising from the front lines, on the streets. The turbulent days of July 2024 were captured through his lens; images that serve both as a historical record and a powerful testimony to the brutal conflict between state violence and the masses' resistance. Jibon Ahmed’s role in this mass movement extended far beyond his professional duties as a photojournalist. Defying the bluster of state machinery, he risked his life to bring the truth to light. He was shot, forced to live a displaced and precarious life for days on end, and became not just an observer but a participant deeply embedded in the movement. His unwavering commitment to truth kept him on the streets even after the uprising. Just like during those turbulent days, his camera continued to document what followed—the aftermath, the struggles of the injured, the grief of the bereaved. The significance of this book as a document of the uprising lies not only in Jibon Ahmed’s photographs, but also in his diary entries, personal accounts, and raw emotional reflections, which have been compiled in this book both in Bangla and English. ১৯০১ থেকে ১৯৪৭ পর্যন্ত সময়টি বাংলা অঞ্চলের রাজনীতি, সংস্কৃতি ও সমাজ ভাবনার অন্যতম প্রধান বিষয় ছিল মুসলমান ও হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়ের মাঝে সম্পর্ক। চিরস্থায়ী বন্দোবস্তের জমিদার প্রথা ও শিক্ষা এবং ব্যবসায় অগ্রগতির কল্যাণে এর আগের শতকটিতে হিন্দু মধ্যবিত্তের বিপুল বিকাশ ঘটে। আলোচ্য সময়টিতে মুসলমানরা শিক্ষার ক্ষেত্রে এবং জমিদারি প্রথাবিরোধী রায়ত ও ভাগচাষীর নানান আন্দোলনের মধ্য দিয়ে নিজেদের রাজনৈতিক শক্তির প্রকাশ ঘটাতে থাকেন। নতুন উত্থিত মুসলমান মধ্যবিত্তের স্থান রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি, সংস্কৃতি ক্ষেত্রে কীভাবে নির্ধারিত হবে, এই প্রশ্নটিই যাবতীয় তর্ক-বিতর্ক-পর্যালোচনার পেছনের প্রেরণা হিসেবে ভূমিকা রেখেছে। ‘সাময়িকপত্রে হিন্দু মুসলিম সম্পর্ক’ গ্রন্থটি এই দিক দিয়ে একটি অনন্য কাজ। যে প্রশ্নটির রক্তপাতময় মীমাংসা হয়েছিল ১৯৪৭ সালের কলকাতার ভয়াবহ দাঙ্গায়, যার রাজনৈতিক বহিঃপ্রকাশ ঘটেছিল বঙ্গভঙ্গ ও বঙ্গভঙ্গ বিরোধী আন্দোলনে, সাম্প্রদায়িক রোয়েদাদে, হিন্দু মহাসভার উত্থান ও পাকিস্তান আন্দোলনে; জমিদারি প্রথাবিরোধী সংগ্রাম ও তেভাগা আন্দোলনে ছিল যার অর্থনৈতিক প্রকাশ, যার সাংস্কৃতিক রূপ মূর্ত হয়েছিল ‘বাঙালিত্ব’ বিষয়ক অজস্র তর্ক ও বিতর্কে, তার অবয়ব অনেকটাই আঁচ করা যাবে এই গ্রন্থটির পাতায় পাতায়। বাংলাভাষার বরেণ্য কোনো কবি, সাহিত্যিক, বুদ্ধিজীবী, চিন্তকই সেই আলোড়নের বাইরে ছিলেন না, ফলে তাদের প্রায় সকলেই এই গ্রন্থে উপস্থিত রয়েছেন। বাংলাদেশের সামাজিক ইতিহাস নিয়ে আগ্রহী প্রত্যেকেই এই গ্রন্থটির কাছে বারবার ফেরত আসবেন।

ফরাসি দার্শনিক ভলতেয়ার ইংরেজ দার্শনিক ফ্রান্সিস বেকনকে আখ্যা দিয়েছিলেন ‘পরীক্ষামূলক দর্শনের জনক’ হিসেবে। বিজ্ঞান ও দর্শনের ইতিহাসকেই বদলে দিয়েছিল ‘The Essays’ গ্রন্থটি। কতগুলো তথ্য কিংবা সিদ্ধান্ত নয়, পাঠককে চিন্তার অনুশীলনে অভ্যস্ত হতে শেখাবে তাঁর এই প্রবন্ধগুলো। মোট আটান্নটি প্রবন্ধ নিয়ে গ্রন্থিত হয়েছিল ফান্সিস বেকনের কালজয়ী গ্রন্থ ‘The Essays’, যার চূড়ান্ত সংস্করণ প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল তাঁর মৃত্যুর মাস কয়েক আগে। সেই থেকে এ পর্যন্ত বেকন পঠিত হয়ে আসছে নিরবচ্ছিন্নভাবে। জীবন ও জগৎ সম্পর্কে তাঁর ভূয়োদর্শী স্বচ্ছ দৃষ্টি এবং এক সফল রেনেসাঁ মানবের অভিজ্ঞতা ও উপলব্ধির সারাৎসার হলো এই প্রবন্ধ সংকলন। ইংল্যান্ড ও ইউরোপীয় দার্শনিক ও বিজ্ঞানীদের সমভাবে তিনি আকৃষ্ট করেছেন, তাঁর চিন্তা প্রভাবিত করেছে সমাজচিন্তা ও রাজনীতিক, এমনকি আইন ও বিচারকাঠামোকেও। বেকনকে পাঠ করা তাই সবধরনের পাঠকের জন্য জরুরি। মানব জীবনের ও সমাজের অনেক অন্তর্নিহিত গূঢ় রহস্য সম্পর্কে ভাবনার খোরাক মিলবে এই প্রবন্ধগুলো থেকে। এই বইটি বেকনের সবকটি প্রবন্ধের প্রথম বাংলা অনুবাদ। অনুবাদক এখানে বক্তব্যবিষয়ের সঙ্গে অত্যন্ত বিশ্বস্ত থেকেও বেকনের বিশিষ্ট গদ্যশৈলীর যথাসম্ভব আস্বাদ বাংলাভাষী পাঠকের কাছে পৌঁছে দেবার চেষ্টা করেছেন এবং সেজন্য নির্মাণ করেছেন একটি বিশিষ্ট ভাষা। বইয়ের শুরুতে অনুবাদকের সুদীর্ঘ মননশীল ভূমিকা, প্রায় প্রতিটি প্রবন্ধে যথাস্থানে টীকাভাষ্য পাঠকের জন্য বেকনকে নিবিড়ভাবে জানার বাড়তি সুযোগ দিয়েছে।

গাছেরা কি কথা বলে? কী বলে গাছেরা? উদ্ভিদের কি আত্মীয় আছে? সমাজ আছে? শত্রু বা বন্ধু আছে? তারা কি একে অন্যকে ডাকে? একে অপরের ডাকে সাড়া দেয়? অন্য প্রাণীদের মতো গাছেরাও কি দলবদ্ধ হয়ে নিজ প্রজাতিকে রক্ষা করে? গাছেরা কি যুদ্ধও করে? গাছেদের মাঝে মাতৃস্নেহ আছে? এত সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর যেমন মিলবে, তেমনি এই বই আরও আরও প্রশ্নের মুখোমুখি দাঁড় করিয়ে দেবে শিশুর জিজ্ঞাসু মনকে। লক্ষ লক্ষ বছর ধরে পৃথিবীর আলো হাওয়ায় প্রাণী আর উদ্ভিদ মিলেমিশে বেড়ে উঠেছে, তাদের বিবর্তনও হয়েছে একসাথেই। পরস্পরের ওপর তাই এতটা নির্ভরশীল তারা। পৃথিবী নামক গ্রহের ইতিহাসে মানুষের মতই গাছেদেরও রয়েছে অযুত গল্পকথা। নীল-সবুজ এই গ্রহের প্রাণের প্রবাহে মানবসন্তান কান পেতে শুনুক গাছেরা কী বলে।

The 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh wrote into the Constitution the concept of the Non-Party Caretaker Government to ensure a smooth transition of power from one elected government to another. The two papers in the book authored by late Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed offer an insider's view of both the period leading to the 13th Amendment and the period of office held thereafter by the Caretaker Government of 1996. This posthumous publication is a tribute to the genius of concerted non-political activism in filling the vacuum created in an essentially dysfunctional system marred by what the author has termed as a closed shop trade union syndrome that generally afflicts political parties. In such a scenario, the period between 1994 and 1996 witnessed political brinkmanship pitted against forces of reason and moderation. The two papers collectively provide a first-hand account of that phenomenon. The intrinsic worth of the papers lies in these serving as records of events and developments that continue to bear upon this nations quest for institutionalising a democratic order. The precedents that the two papers deal with have, with time, attained greater significance not only for standards set but also the strains to which the caretaker mechanism has been subjected in the following decade.
